When we bought the Barn in France a lot of our older furniture inhertied furniture and our own Victorian styled (original or repro) were ear-marked to move over there. This meant that after many years in our modern house I was finally able to re-work the space in line with a contemporary style. A lot to think about!

One of the first decisions we had to make was whether to knock through from the kitchen to the dining room to make an open plan cooking and eating space. Most of our neighbours have done either this or created a new living/dining space by knocking though to the lounge.

We mulled this over for some time. It was a big decision and we needed to be sure it was what we really wanted and how it would work for us. I produced some floor plans positioning furniture, radiators etc and then prioritised what we needed to buy - firstly to finish off the kitchen area and next for the dining room space.

I spent many hours with the Interior Design Directory looking at websites and items and trawling the internet for deals and was finally able to book the builder and order the flooring from Karndean Flooring as a starting point.

We encountered structural issues when the structural engineer made incorrect assumuptions about fitting the steel which, as he admitted during a crisis meeting, he had over specified. The result of this is that the beam sits an extra 2" (5cm) lower than originally planned and had a knock-on effect to the placing and locating of the larder unit.

There was, of course, dust everywhere and we were still trying to use the limited space in the kitchen. The following photos give some indication of where we started. So watch out for next months update. How did we deal with the larder unit that was too high? What does the floor look like? Did I find suitably stylish radiators to fit the space? Did track down a cooker that met our needs?
