France

Part IV - more about the Barn in the Haute Vienne, France and how I decided how to decorate it.

Planning the schemes.....

When moving into a brand new property it can be quite daunting planning how you are going to use the space and how you will decorate it. You will generally have an idea of what the room was designed for (see Barn Floorplan) but may not initally see how you can use it.

I think it’s important when moving house to consider the style of the property and your exisiting furniture and decide whether or not you want to update the style.

When we moved into our modern box shaped house 13 years ago we brought with us several pieces of good quality antique or reproduction furniture. It was always understood that these would be replaced by more contemporary items, although as several had sentimental attachments, it was a decision we delayed pending buying the property in France.

Now we have the Barn, I need to consider the style taking into account the furniture that is ear-marked to move over there. Plus, removing the furniture means that we also need to re-stock here. A lot to think about!

So, time to clear the mind and put ideas, thoughts and pictures of how our home in France will look on paper.

The first thing I decided was the colours and instead of my favourite blue, which will continue to be used in the UK, chose to use red and green. Next I spent several weeks working through lots and lots of home interiors magazines tearing out any pictures that made me think of France, a personal dream or related to the look I wanted and, so that I didn’t lose them, I stuck the most important ones into a notebook.

Magazine pictures in scarapbook

The notebook also details what is to be taken to France and what needs to be bought and then each area in turn:- Larder/Utility, Bedroom (Back), Kitchen, Living/dining area, Bedroom (Front); in more detail. More on these in later instalments.

Notes from Scrapbook

So, watch out for next months thoughts and ideas for the Utility space.
